Congo-Europe Gas Synergies: GIE to Showcase Collaborative Strategies at CEIF 2025
)
Boyana Achovski, Former Secretary General of Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE), will join the speaker line-up at THE Congo Energy & Investment Forum (CEIF), which runs from March 24-26, 2025 in Brazzaville. As a premier natural gas association, GIE has worked to support Africa’s ambitions to increase LNG exports, expand pipelines and integrate with regional energy networks.
The Republic of Congo is advancing its role as a regional gas hub with flagship projects like Eni’s Congo LNG development, expected to produce 3 million metric tons annually, and Wing Wah’s Banga Kayo project, set to transform flared gas into dry gas, natural gas, LNG, LPG and polypropylene for the local market and export.
The inaugural Congo Energy & Investment Forum, set for March 24-26, 2025, in Brazzaville, under the patronage of President Denis Sassou Nguesso and supported by the Ministry of Hydrocarbons and Société National des Pétroles du Congo, will bring together international investors and local stakeholders to explore national and regional energy and infrastructure opportunities. The event will explore the latest gas-to-power projects and provide updates on ongoing expansions across the country.
Future plans aim to bolster gas-to-power initiatives, promote industrial gas applications and integrate with the Central African regional energy grid. Perenco’s Tchendo 2 Mobil Offshore Production Unit began generating power in June 2024, with three newly installed gas turbines fueled by up to 10 million cubic feet of gas per day. In the same month, the World Bank allocated $100 million to expand gas-to-power plants, aiming to meet the Republic of Congo’s projected demand of 900 MW by 2025.
GIE has recently focused on integrating renewable gases like hydrogen and biomethane into Europe’s gas infrastructure, advancing storage solutions and enhancing cross-border interconnectivity to support energy resilience and decarbonization goals. Drawing from these initiatives, GIE can provide a roadmap for Congo to leverage similar strategies, fostering investment and accelerating the development of its gas infrastructure and export networks.
