EU Grants €1.5M to Renewable Energy Center in Congo

The European Union (EU) has granted €1.5 million to finance the Center of Excellence for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (CEO) in Oyo, Republic of Congo. The grant is part of a €6 million EU investment aimed at implementing a regional energy program.

The CEO aims to advance research and development in renewable energy and energy efficiency, not only in Congo but across the Economic Community of Central African States. It also seeks to establish mechanisms to ensure a reliable clean energy market and promote energy-related technologies.

The CEO is currently mentoring nine young researchers working under the supervision of two experts mandated by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization. The CEO is currently working on a five-year project focused on strengthening national energy institutions, providing professional training and funding renewable energy initiatives in rural areas. These efforts are already showing tangible results, including the development of a biogas digester.
