The Republic of Congo’s national oil company the National Petroleum Company of Congo (SNPC) has presented its EcoZamba reforestation project at the 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29).
On November 11, the SNPC delegation, led by CEO Raoul Ominga, highlighted key energy transition efforts and addressed pressing environmental issues at COP29.
EcoZamba aims to deliver environmental, social and economic benefits by preserving essential carbon sinks in the Congo. In collaboration with consultancy group Forest Resource Management, the SNPC plans to plant 1,000 hectares of acacia and eucalyptus forests as part of the project's pilot phase.
Designed to be self-sustaining, EcoZamba will be funded through the creation and sale of carbon credits. At COP29, the SNPC delegation placed a strong emphasis on the importance of securing financing for similar initiatives, aiming to make funding a central topic in discussions at COP29.
