Eni: Phase 2 of Congo LNG to Begin Operations by December 2025

Eni Congo aims to achieve the startup of phase 2 of the Congo LNG project by December 2025, according to Andrea Barberi, Eni Congo Managing Director.

Speaking to Energy Capital & Power, during the Congo Energy & Investment Forum (CEIF), Barberi said sail way of the FLNG vessel from China to the Republic of Congo will be in September 2025, ahead of the December startup.

Phase 2 will enable Eni to increase gas production at Congo LNG from 0.6 million tons per annum to 3 million tons.

What are some of Eni’s major achievements within Congo’s energy sector?

We have been in the country since 1968 and developed several projects in the oil sector. Our investments in gas began in 2002, initially focused on the power generation sector. In 2022, we expanded into onshore LNG operations. We proved an amazing track record time with execution of the Congo LNG within one year, after achieving a FID for the project in December 2022. We completed the first LNG cargo in February 2024. We have contributed to something historic making Congo one of the world’s members producing LNG.

What makes Congo an attractive market for Eni and what was your key message and take away from CEIF?

Congo offers a stable regulatory and contractual framework, along with strong collaboration among stakeholders, including the national oil company, SNPC. We are also driving local content development through sustainability and community development projects. With well-established infrastructure, Congo is a promising market for growth. We are investing in the energy transition - through initiatives in vegetable oil production and agriculture - to support a more sustainable energy future.
